College of Professional Pilots of Canada

We are a non-profit, non-labour organization with the aim of unifying Canada’s professional pilots based on the common grounds of safety, professional standards, and continuous improvement.

Benefits of Membership

The College of Pilots is a non-profit organization that endeavours to support Canadian licenced pilots and their families.

  • Mentorship Program

For current professional pilots it could mean better prepared and trained flight crew. It would mean a professional designation. It would mean having a self governing body with disciplinary actions that would be taken in-house by a panel of peers, instead of a courthouse where discipline has been shown to be ineffective and inappropriate. It would reduce liability and better protect pilots and the public.

Other less tangible benefits are those of stewardship: leaving the industry in an improved state than you yourself had. We have all told stories of times where we experienced events that could have been better, possibly leading to unsafe or unfair conditions. It’s about getting back control of the vocation that you love and invested so much energy into. It’s about having a say on where it will move next and how our lives and families’ lives will benefit.

Proposed Timeline of Major Initiatives

Currently, the College has no mandated powers of oversight and its members are truly pioneers in moving the endeavour forward. Several items have been identified as “areas of interest” and they have been sorted by relevance and ability to execute given our scarce resources. A tentative timeline of tasks is as follows:

Near Term Items (achievable in 2023):

  • Recruiting and communicating the vision (ongoing).
  • Creating opportunities between mentors and proteges (ongoing).
  • Initiate insurance plans for members (done).

Medium Term Items (2024-2026):

  • Refine the vision to fit members’ vision for the College (ongoing through survey)
  • Add content around the reference material and best practice models below (ongoing).
  • Reinforce credibility through our Communications and Advocacy (ongoing).
  • Explore scholarship and bursary opportunities for fledgling pilots (underway).

Potential Operational Scope

The College supports a balanced approach of appropriate performance-based measures in conjunction with prescriptive based regulations. The College intends to create opportunities for industry experts to share their knowledge and experiences with the express goal of creating best practices models and reference material pertaining to:

  • advances in flight training techniques, crew resource management, threat and error management, simulation technology and aircraft in-flight instruction
  • programs for alcohol and substance abuse, critical incident response protocols, and mental health support
  • maintenance of professional standards through education and effective mentoring & role-modelling
  • financial aid, scholarships, bursaries and promotional efforts to encourage new aviation professionals.

The College is also working to establish a comprehensive, completely transportable group insurance plan that all members can access.

As can be viewed through visiting the pages of this website, some aspects of the project are established or underway and others remains to be initiated. You can help by joining the effort; first by becoming a member and then by volunteering your time.
